Finding the Positive.

Our trip on Thursday, August 26th, started by meeting with 2003 SJPD graduate Oby, who is currently serving as a pastor at a UCC church.  We took the bus to Our Saviour’s Housing and were showed the facility by Volunteer Coordinator Colleen.  This amazing resource for homeless people is more than just a bed and a meal. Once a person is given a space, it is guaranteed to them for 28 days. They also provide assistance finding housing and employment.  After we thanked and wished Colleen a good weekend, we went to St. Martin’s Table for lunch. This company is very aware of being a positive force in the community.  More than the fact that the food was local, organic and delicious, the servers are volunteers and the tips that they earn go to a charity every month. To date St. Martin’s Table has donated $200,000! After the exploring this great restaurant, we went to Outfront Minnesota, whose mission is to end violence against GLBT people. We were able to meet with Kelly and she answered all of our questions.

This day trip was amazing. I was able to see people with such a drive and passion for what they are doing. While it was disheartening to learn that so many people are in need, there was this constant sense of hope that radiated from the workers. Their devotion to the organizations was nothing short of inspirational.

It is very interesting to hear of your travels and experiences. I know I will never be there so I must experience it vicariously. I am pleased to hear all is going well. Be good to Dr. Steinwand.
